CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning) is one expression of a broader family of approaches that fall under Content-Based Instruction (CBI). While often presented as distinct methodologies, approaches such as CLT (Communicative Language Teaching), TBLT (Task-Based Language Teaching), ESP (English for Specific Purposes), and EMI (English as a Medium of Instruction) share a common core: they prioritize meaning, context, and purposeful language use over isolated form-focused instruction.
From this perspective, CLIL is not an outlier but part of a continuum. All of these approaches engage learners through meaningful content, offering real-world relevance, deeper cognitive engagement, and increased linguistic salience—key drivers of second language acquisition (SLA). They also tend to support motivation by fostering a sense of autonomy and competence, particularly when learners use English as a tool to access and process meaning.
This talk will argue that the differences between these approaches are often overstated, and that viewing them through the unifying lens of CBI provides a clearer, more practical framework for teaching. At the same time, it will address a critical—and frequently overlooked—challenge: ensuring that content difficulty aligns closely with learner proficiency.
Finally, we will consider how assessment in CBI-oriented classrooms can adapt in the age of AI.
